Throwback Thursday: 112’s “Love Me”

November 27th, 2014

While fans of R&B group 112 would most likely cite their favorite song as “Peaches and Cream” or the remix to “Only You,” which featured rappers The Notorious B.I.G. and Mase, my personal favorite is one most people probably don’t know—“Love Me.” Released as the first single off their second studio album, Room 112, the track, which also featured Mase, samples “Don’t You Know That?” by Luther Vandross. “Love Me” successfully blends the smooth sounds of the R&B group with the amazing rhymes of Mase. The record peaked at number 17 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number eight on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.

For those who don’t know, 112 originally formed in Atlanta, Georgia when members Quinnes “Q” Parker, Daron Jones, Marvin “Slim” Scandrick, and Michael Keith all met while attending high school. There were a lot of changes in the lineup with original members Reginald Finley & Aldon Lagon exiting the group before the quartet auditioned for Sean “Diddy” Combs outside of Atlanta’s Club 112, which was the inspiration for their group name. 112 then moved to New York City and released their debut album 112 in 1996, which went double platinum.

Room 112 was released in 1998 and the group promoted the album by going on tour with singer Whitney Houston during her My Love Is Your Love tour in the summer of 1999. Their third album, Part III, was released in 2001 and featured the chart topping single “It’s Over Now.” During 2001, 112 started to part ways with Bad Boy Records but it didn’t affect record sales as Part III debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart.

Their fourth album, Hot and Wet, marked their debut with Def Jam Records but failed to reach the success of their previous records. In 2005, their fifth effort, Pleasure & Pain, fared better as it reached platinum status and spawned the popular track “U Already Know.” After, the group members decided to part ways and go solo.

Currently, 112 are back together and doing a tour called For the Fans Tour. Hopefully, a new album surfaces from the group because they are extremely talented and fans would be very pleased. Check out the music video to 112’s “Love Me” below.
