THROWBACK THURSDAY – TONI BRAXTON’S “I HEART YOU”
September 18th, 2014
Whenever most people think of a song by the beautiful and talented Toni Braxton, it’s usually her bigger hits like “Unbreak My Heart” or “He Wasn’t Man Enough For Me.” Personally, my favorite song from Braxton is her 2012 record “I Heart You.” The song was a bit of a new sound for the R&B singer-songwriter, actress, and Braxton Family Values star since it was more dance-pop than R&B but still had that Toni Braxton flare to it.
For those who might be scratching their heads, Braxton’s “I Heart You” was recorded around the time she and the rest of the Braxton sisters were filming the second season of their hit WE TV reality series and was meant to be the first single off of her upcoming album, which was titled Chapter VIII: The Encore of a Gemstone. The lyrics of the song are about being in love with someone and really desiring that they feel the same way as well. Unfortunately, the album never was released as Braxton was contemplating retiring from music due to her “falling out of love with music,” which she said on The Wendy Williams Show in 2013. Fortunately, she decided to continue her music career and ended up recording Love, Marriage, & Divorce, a duet album with singer-songwriter & record producer Babyface, which was released in February of this year.
I sincerely hope that Toni Braxton records a new solo album soon and records at least one song similar to “I Heart You” since the song peaked at number one on the Billboard’s US Hot Dance Club Songs in 2012. It’s obvious that she can resonate with a dance-pop sound so I believe she should do more dance-pop songs to keep her relevant within that music genre.
